Jeff and I are big foodies, so we wanted a venue with an amazing restaurant. After eating a delicious meal at The Bernards Inn, we decided to take a tour of the venue and were blown away. It has the timeless elegance and romantic swagger of a Humphrey Bogart movie.

Coordinating everything from Austin, we needed an attentive staff. Jessica Quesada, our event coordinator, was amazing. She answered every question we had and matched our energy, enthusiasm, and creativity the whole way. Near the end of our planning, we trusted her recommendations so much that we did not even sample certain menu items ahead of time. For instance, our strawberry-banana and mimosa cream cake was her collaboration with the Inn’s pastry chef.

We had a shortened Catholic ceremony in Saint Vincent Martyr, a beautiful church in Jeff’s hometown in NJ. Father George learned how to Facetime just so we could have our meetings with him from Texas!

Jessica (25 and a school counselor) and Barbara (44 and a police lieutenant) met at the university where Jess attended undergraduate and graduate school, and where Barbara works in the fall of 2011. After seeing each other around campus, Barbara invited Jess over to her apartment, where they both ate their favorite sandwich — peanut butter and Nutella. “We quickly fell for one another,” says Jess and the pair later bought a home together. Three months later, the pair got dinner at their favorite date spot, The Melting Pot, where a small dessert plate was uncovered to reveal the words, “Will you marry me?” as Barbara got down on one knee. After their romantic proposal, Jessica and Barbara started planning a wedding with a country, rustic theme at The Bernards Inn in Bernardsville, New Jersey.

“We met in 1987 when I responded to an ad in a neighborhood periodical. It was at a time in our life when we were both looking to meet someone.  I had been divorced five years. Rich too, was starting a single life anew. He lived in Flemington but was commuting by trains two hours each way to his work location in New York City. So, long before social media and hand held cell phones, he decided to try a shopping paper ad. Our first date was on February 14, 1987 at a charming restaurant on the Delaware River (Black Bass Hotel) in Bucks County Pennsylvania. Our courtship lasted 28 years through several phases of life, though we lived separately.”

John: We met in law school. Basically she picked me up at a bar.

Sarah: That is true. We both went to Brooklyn Law School and had a couple of classes together. He caught my eye. What can I say? We started dating, and after a night out with friends in October 2012 John proposed. I was in the kitchen making tea, I don’t know why because I’d never done that before. He said, “Sarah come into the room,” and usually he does something silly but when I walked over, there he was on his knee with the ring. The Bernards Inn is the only place we looked at. I’m from the next town over, and we used to go to Bernardsville all the time. When John and I visited, it was perfect. It had an old-fashioned elegant charm.

J: It has understated elegance. It’s just gorgeous, a great little town, and the staff at The Bernards Inn is incredible.

CJ and I met working at a French restaurant in Westfield. Three weeks later, we started dating and knew immediately that we were meant for each other. After a year of dating, CJ surprised me by taking me to Cancun. The first night we arrived, he proposed on the balcony of the resort where we were staying.  It was so romantic and it’s a night I’ll never forget. Before going to The Bernards Inn, we had visited countless other venues. My father accompanied us the first time we visited The Bernards Inn and we all fell in love with the warmth and beauty of it.

“Our wedding at the Bernards Inn was lightly inspired by the carefree and romantic vibe of the 1920s. The flowers, my dress, the invitations and decorations all played into that laid-back but elegant theme. About eighty of our closest family members and friends helped us celebrate on the perfect fall day. The morning of the wedding was so rainy and cloudy but the sun came out right as Ian and I were getting ready to see each other for our photos. I’ve never smiled and laughed as much as I did on our wedding day. I had thought about eloping but am so glad and grateful we celebrated with all of our loved ones!”

Katie Meyer and Pete Moor were college sweethearts who knew that they would someday marry. The proposal came over the holidays in 2010, as the two set out on a walk through Manhattan’s Central Park. As they approached Bethesda Fountain, Pete insisted that Katie slow down. She could see a vitrine filled with roses and a framed love letter. There were also champagne flutes and a bottle of champagne. As Pete got down on one knee, he presented the ring that Katie had always fantasized about: a solitaire in a platinum band.

Stephen and I met at work four years ago. We both were in sales at a company in Manhattan. At first, we were shy around one another, but I immediately noticed his unique sense of humor, which appealed to me very much. I was assigned a sales mentor to help in my training, but it wasn’t long before I replaced him with Stephen and he became my go-to guy for all my questions.
