GO BIRDING! Enjoy birding with NJ Audubon at the Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary. A naturalist will guide you along the trails of the Sanctuary in search of the birds that are found here in the spring. The Sanctuary has been host to over 145 birds, from rare sightings such as Mississippi Kite to common sightings like the Belted Kingfisher and Cooper’s Hawk.
At the Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary, the Field Loop Trail provides a short, 1 hour, easy hike through fields and young forest where Indigo Buntings and Red-tailed Hawks are seen, and then a stop at the Passaic River to look for Louisiana Waterthrush, Wood Duck, Belted Kingfisher, and Great Blue Heron.
The Dogwood Trail meanders through the forest of the Sanctuary, and is a longer, 1 ½ to 2 hour walk of moderate difficulty. Pileated Woodpecker, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Worm-eating Warbler, Wood Thrush, and Ovenbird are some of the gems we might see along the way.
Loaner binoculars, field scopes, and field guides are available during your visit to the Sanctuary. After your walk, feel free to visit the gift shop and nature center.
