Recently, David Ramey, proprietor/winemaker at Ramey Cellars visited with us here at the Bernards Inn.
David is quite a character, interesting, entertaining, down to earth, and
extremely intelligent. He is the type of guy you just want to hang out with
to hear all the interesting stories he has to tell. We pour his Ramey Russian River Chardonnay by the glass, and without a doubt, a most popular
Chardonnay that is Burgundian in style. David sources his fruit from all
high end single vineyards of: Rocholi, Dutton Ranches, Charles Heintz, and
Green Pastures Vineyards. Gravelly soils provide a crisper mouth feel which
results in a California wine that drinks more like a white burgundy. Within the appellation series of Russian River, Carneros, and Sonoma Coast, the wines will show the effect of site (terroir). In comparison if you think about it, much like the terroir of the white burgundy appellations of Meursault, Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet.
David has many years in the wine industry. In past years he has been the
winemaker at Dominus, Matanzas Creek and Chalk Hill. David did a brief
synopsis of his tenures in the wine industry for our staff, and if you could
have seen the looks on their faces, you would see how he memorizes whomever he speaks with. I look forward to seeing David every year, and tasting through his portfolio of fine wines.
