Last Sunday, my wife Tiina and I celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary. It was a great day in a lot of respects. Probably most significant is that we made it this far without one of us strangling the other. I guess that’s the sign of a successful marriage. The weather was just as beautiful as it was on the day we were married—blue skies, bright sunshine and a cool breeze. In the morning we opened the cards we had gotten for each other. Tiina’s was wonderfully sentimental. The message talked about taking care of each other. Mine was sentimental in a different sort of way. It had a picture of two Shar-Peis (the Chinese dog with all the big, mushy wrinkles) with their faces pressed against each other. One dog is saying: “Snuggle-bunny, where are you? I can’t find my glasses.” The other dog replies: “What, Sweetie-pie? Can’t hear you?” The message in my card said: “We may be getting a little on the wrinkly side, but we still look good together.” I laughed when I bought the card and thank goodness my wife still appreciates my sense of humor after all these years.
With two kids in college, it’s getting harder to find family time together, but we managed to continue our anniversary day celebration with both of them. Not at the same time, of course. We had a great lunch with our daughter Erika on the patio of the Bamboo Grill which overlooks the golf course of the Basking Ridge Country Club. Later that evening, we had an exceptional dinner with our son Peter on the terrace of The Bernards Inn. For most of the night we had the terrace all to ourselves. The conversation was lively, the setting was ideal, and the food and drink were perfect. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate 22 years together. Here’s to the next 22, Sweetie!
